Ex-cops face trial in Shenandoah beating cover-up
As Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala lay dying on a Shenandoah street on July 12, 2008, three borough police officers started covering up what had occurred instead of properly investigating it, federal prosecutors allege.
At 9:30 a.m. today, the trial for those three now-former officers - Matthew R. Nestor, William Moyer and Jason Hayes - is scheduled to begin at the Max Rosenn U.S. Courthouse, Wilkes-Barre. Senior U.S. District Judge A. Richard Caputo will preside over the trial.
Federal authorities have charged Mr. Nestor, Mr. Moyer and Mr. Hayes, who were indicted by a grand jury Dec. 10, 2009, with conspiring to obstruct justice. Mr. Moyer also has been charged with witness and evidence tampering and lying to the FBI.
