2 former Shenandoah officers allowed to leave homes

WILKES-BARRE - Delving into the nuances of relationships, a federal judge on Wednesday ruled a former Shenandoah police officer accused of impeding a murder investigation can have contact with his fiancee, the mother of a teenager charged in the same 2008 slaying of an illegal Mexican immigrant.

"It seems unnatural to say they can't have any contact," Senior U.S. District Judge A. Richard Caputo said.

Engaged since 2006, Jason Hayes and Tammey Piekarsky's plans to marry stalled when federal authorities charged Hayes with obstructing the investigation into the fatal beating of Luis Eduardo Ramirez Zavala. U.S. District Judge Malachy E. Mannion barred Hayes from contacting Piekarsky and her son, Brandon J., who was acquitted of third-degree murder in the case but later charged with a federal hate crime....
