The White House announcement that slain San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk will be among sixteen August 12 recipients of the Medal of Honor—the nation’s highest civilian award—can be regarded as a rebuke to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who earlier this year vetoed legislation that would have honored the LGBT civil rights leader with a statewide “Harvey Milk Day” on Milk’s birthday, May 22.

Milk, who helped lead the successful effort to defeat the anti-gay Briggs Initiative in 1978, was the first openly gay elected official in a major US city. As Supervisor, Milk worked to pass San Francisco’s first gay rights ordinance, and is credited with saving the life of more than one desperate gay teenager who found hope in Milk’s openness and pride about his sexual orientation.....
