McInerney Offered Plea Deal for Lawrence King killing

McInerney Offered Plea Deal - Yahoo! News
Brandon McInerney, the 15-year-old boy who is charged with killing classmate Lawrence King, has been offered a plea deal by prosecutors, reports the Ventura County Star. Per the agreement, McInerney will receive a lighter sentence if he pleads guilty to first-degree murder.

Ventura County district attorney Maeve Fox told the Star that under the deal the boy's maximum sentence will be 25 years to life rather than 53 years to life. She says the deal was offered because of his young age, although McInerney is being tried as an adult.

McInerney is charged with shooting Larry King in an Oxnard classroom in February 2008 after King told him he liked him.

Fox also said the prosecution would allow McInerney to plead guilty to a hate-crime charge and serve that sentence simultaneously with the murder sentence. She has expressed frustration over the defense attorneys' slow action; the preliminary hearing has been postponed for July 20 at the request of the defense....
