SEASIDE, Ore. - Two 22-year-old men who left a campfire to walk along the beach in Seaside were beaten unconscious in what appears to have been a hate crime, according to police.

Early Sunday morning, officers responded to the Best Western hotel on a report that two men had been assaulted on the beach.

According to the Seaside Police Department, their preliminary investigation indicates two nursing students from Wash. state were attacked after they had been at a campfire on the beach and decided to walk towards the water.

They told police they were jumped by three or four young white males dressed in black who beat them unconscious, leaving one of them with a significant eye injury.

The victims are openly gay and reported that their attackers made anti-gay statements during the assault. Police are investigating this as a hate crime and want to know who was present at the campfire prior to the attack. They have descriptions of some of them....
