MASS DEMONSTRATION AGAINST CUTS for Funds For HIV&AIDS Services & Prevention - NYC 8/15 2 -3:30 pm

In 2006, an estimated 56,300 new HIV infections occurred in the US – a number that is substantially higher than the previous estimate of 40,000 annual new infections. In fact, the new incidence of HIV infections is 40.75% higher than previously predicted by the CDC. Cuts to HIV/AIDS programs including prevention and education, rapid testing, clean-syringe distribution, Hepatitis C screening, substance abuse prevention and legal services, will mean that those at risk will stay at risk. The impact of the budget cuts is particularly detrimental to the black and Latino communities, where the incidence of new HIV cases continues to be disproportionately higher.

The rate of AIDS diagnoses for black adults and adolescents was 10 times the rate for whites and nearly 3 times the rate for Hispanics.
